TOPIC: GODLY COUNSEL

MEMORISE

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. Proverbs 19:20

BIBLE TEXT

Exodus 18:13-26

[13]And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

[14]And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even

[15]And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God

[16]When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

[17]And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

[18]Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

[19]Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

[20]And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

[21]Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

[22]And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

[23]If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

[24]So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

[25]And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

[26]And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

MESSAGE

In 2 Kings 5:1-14, Naaman, a commander in the Syrian army, came to Elisha because he needed healing from leprosy. The prophet instructed him to do something he felt was way below his status, he was to dip himself seven times in River Jordan, a river he considered to be way below other prestigious rivers in his home country. Angrily, Naaman rejected Elisha's instruction and was already on his way back to Syria when one of his servants counselled him to obey the prophet's instructions. Thank God he heeded his servant's counsel and did as Elisha had instructed. He was cured of his leprosy immediately, and his skin became like that of a newborn. If he had rejected his servant's simple advice, he would have had to live the rest of his life as a leper. The greatest miracle of your life might be tied to hearing and obeying godly counsel. It is important to never ignore godly counsel, no matter the age or status of the person or people giving the counsel. "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety." Proverbs 11:14

In today's Bible reading, Jethro travelled to the wilderness to visit Moses, his son-in-law. During his visit, he observed how Moses attended to every single issue that arose in the camp of the Israelites all by himself, from morning to night, such that at the end of every day, he was always exhausted. After making this observation, Jethro counselled Moses on what to do. He told him to choose rulers of different ranks from among the people who could also judge matters that arose within the camp. Although Jethro didn't have the burning bush experience that Moses had, Moses listened to him and received God's counsel through him. "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." James 4:6

Humility or meekness is an ingredient for receiving God's grace. You need a meek heart to properly discern when God is speaking through someone and receive what He has to say to you through them. Moses was known as the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3), and his meekness was what made him able to receive counsel from people who seemed not to have attained his spiritual height and influence. No matter high you get, God wants you to remain meek. Ask God for a meek heart to receive His counsel through whatever vessel or method He chooses to use.

PRAYER POINT

Father, please give me a meek heart so that I can receive Your counsel through whatever vessel or method You choose to use to speak in Jesus' name

THEME: SAY TO THIS MOUNTAIN

MEMORISE:

For verily I say unto you, that whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

Mark 11:23

READ: Genesis 1:1-3

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

MESSAGE

God created the world by speaking it into existence, as we see in today’s Bible reading. The earth was in a terrible shape; it was void and covered in darkness. Amid this chaos, God called forth light to shine out of the darkness, and His creative work began. Hebrews 11:3 says, through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”

Everything that we see was created by the power of God’s word. There is creative power in the word of God. This is why, as a child of God, when challenges come your way, you do not complain. Rather than complain, you should put the word of God on your lips and speak His is will into existence. No matter the kind of obstacles that are hindering God’s will from being manifested in your life, He wants you to speak and command them to move out of the way.

Who art thou, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.  Zechariah 4:7

The authority to speak to mountains is not exclusively for ministers of God. Rather, it is for every genuine child of God. This means that, if you are a child of God and you command the mountains that are contrary to God’s will in your life to disappear in Jesus’ name, they will obey. The Bible says in Philippians 2:9-10 that at the mention of the name of Jesus, every knee in heaven, on earth, or underneath the earth, should bow.

Some Christians speak to their mountains, but they say the wrong things. Instead of commanding a mountain to be moved, they plead with it for mercy or complain about it. When God says, ‘Speak to the mountain’, He wants you to address it squarely.

However, you must get rid of doubt so you can speak authoritatively to that mountain. James 1:6 says: but let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

Beloved, doubt robs believers of their authority, and you must not permit it in your heart. Believe in the absolute power of God’s word without any doubt, and no mountain will be able to stand before you.

KEY POINT

Don’t complain about negative situations in your life; rather, speak God’s will into existence concerning them.

TOPIC: RUN FROM REBELS

MEMORISE

“God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.” - (Psalm 68:6)

READ: Numbers 16:1-35 (KJV)

1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:

2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:

3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the Lord?

4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face:

5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the Lord will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near unto him.

6 This do; Take you censers, Korah, and all his company;

7 And put fire therein, and put incense in them before the Lord to morrow: and it shall be that the man whom the Lord doth choose, he shall be holy: ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.

8 And Moses said unto Korah, Hear, I pray you, ye sons of Levi:

9 Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the Lord, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them?

10 And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?

11 For which cause both thou and all thy company are gathered together against the Lord: and what is Aaron, that ye murmur against him?

12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab: which said, We will not come up:

13 Is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land that floweth with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, except thou make thyself altogether a prince over us?

14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land that floweth with milk and honey, or given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.

15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the Lord, Respect not thou their offering: I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.

16 And Moses said unto Korah, Be thou and all thy company before the Lord, thou, and they, and Aaron, to morrow:

17 And take every man his censer, and put incense in them, and bring ye before the Lord every man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; thou also, and Aaron, each of you his censer.

18 And they took every man his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood in the door of the tabernacle of the congregation with Moses and Aaron.

19 And Korah gathered all the congregation against them unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the congregation.

20 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,

21 Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

22 And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

23 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

24 Speak unto the congregation, saying, Get you up from about the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.

25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

26 And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of their's, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

27 So they gat up from the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood in the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

28 And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the Lord hath sent me to do all these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind.

29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then the Lord hath not sent me.

30 But if the Lord make a new thing, and the earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the Lord.

31 And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:

32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.

33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.

34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.

35 And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

MESSAGE

Today's Bible reading is a sad story with many important lessons. It is a sad story because many people died avoidable deaths by joining a rebel to gang up against Moses, the man of God. The Bible reading begins by telling us that Korah and two brothers, Dathan and Abiram, came together to confront Moses. If you study the story carefully, you will see that the rebellion began with Korah because in many verses of the chapter, the words 'Korah and his company' were used. Just one man started a rebellion that killed about fifteen thousand people. Rebellion is deadly!

The story might have played out differently if the other people mentioned in the chapter had refused to join Korah in the rebellion when he approached them. They should have discouraged him from being rebellious and counselled him to honour Moses. God can speak to anyone, but He doesn't choose everyone to lead His people or be at the forefront of His move. If Korah had understood the sacred office that Moses occupied, maybe he wouldn't have incited a rebellion against him.

Today, there are also rebels in the body of Christ. They think that they know more than the spiritual leaders God placed over them and often believe that they should be at the forefront of what God is doing. If God has not called you into a particular office in His church, don't try to bring those who occupy such offices down. Also, don't try to operate in an office that God has not called you into because you will only expose yourself to danger. King Uzziah became leprous because he tried to function in an office God had not called him into (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). When people rebel against God's ordained hierarchy, they become stranded in life.

We live in a generation where some young people think they have enough revelation from God's word to speak against the spiritual elders in the church. When some of them have a large social media following, they begin to think that they have attained a notable spiritual height and can say anything they like to anyone. Popularity and social media followership are, however, not the same as spiritual authority.

Beloved, if there are rebels around you, run far away from them so that you do not partake in their judgement. Also, if you have been speaking disrespectfully against those that God has given the authority to lead the church, repent now. Rebellion is dangerous, and it never profits anyone.

REFLECTION

Are you supporting or keeping company with rebels?

MEMORISE

The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

Psalm 20:1

READ: Psalms 118:6-12

6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

7 The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.

8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

10 All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.

11 They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

12 They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

MESSAGE

A person’s future can be influenced by his or her name. For example, Moses was so named in Exodus 2:10 because he was drawn out of water. throughout his lifetime, he continually had encounters with water. God used him to perform several miracles with water, including changing water to blood (Exodus 7:20), parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21), turning bitter water to sweet water (Exodus 15), and bringing water out of the rock (Exodus 17).

A names are important; this is why God had to change the names of some people in the Bible so that their destinies could be fulfilled. My mother told me that on her way to see a priest concerning my baptismal name, the name she had in mind was Elisha. However, by the time she got to the Priest, she had forgotten the name, so she told him that she would name me Enoch. When she shared this story with me, I told her that I would keep the two names-Elisha, who had a double portion of the anointing, and Enoch, the man who walked with God.

The names people are called are important to their destinies, but there isa name that is greater than all names, and that name is JESUS. In Philippians 2:9-11, the Bible says, Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father:

In Psalm 118:10-13, David revealed the secret to his victory. He said that when the nations compassed him about, he destroyed them in the name of the Lord. He understood the power in the name of the Lord.

Beloved, is there anything troubling you as a child of God Does it have a name? If it does, I congratulate you because you have just defeated it. As long as it has a name, there is a name above it. Even if doctors can’t find a name for anything that might be troubling you medically and they say that all they can see from their diagnosis is ‘nothing’, that is still a name, and when you trust in the name of the Lord, you will always be victorious. Call on the name of the Lord today, and He will give you victory over anything that is troubling you.

REFLECTION

Do you have absolute trust in the name of Jesus?

HYMN 1: ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS NAME

1 All hail the power of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall.

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown him Lord of all.

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown him Lord of all!

2 O seed of Israel’s chosen race

Now ransomed from the fall,

Hail him who saves you by his grace,

And crown him Lord of all.

Hail him who saves you by his grace,

And crown him Lord of all!

3 Let every tongue and every tribe

Responsive to his call,

To him all majesty ascribe,

And crown him Lord of all.

To him all majesty ascribe,

And crown him Lord of all!

4 Oh, that with all the sacred throng

We at his feet may fall!

We’ll join the everlasting song

And crown him Lord of all.

We’ll join the everlasting song

And crown him Lord of all.
