Open Heavens Daily Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: TUESDAY AUGUST 23RD, 2022.

THEME: BE CONTENT II

MEMORISE:

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Philippians 4:11

READ: Philippians 4:11 -13

11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

MESSAGE

The interesting thing about contentment is that it is something you can learn. Paul said he had learnt to be content whether he had plenty or little. You can learn contentment and you can start learning it right now. Everybody needs to learn to be content. When you look at Paul's statement, you can understand his mindset. What he was actually saying when he said that he was content whether in plenty or in lack is that he knew that no situation is permanent. This is a very important mindset to help us learn contentment. When you know your present situation is not permanent and things will soon get better, then you will be content with what you have now. When you know that every day is not a feast, you won't be expecting to eat every delicacy possible every day. In any case, all you need is to eat enough to give you strength for the day.

The moment you learn contentment, you begin to enjoy the peace of God that passes all understanding because you won't worry about tomorrow. Once you are content, nobody can tempt you to steal or falsify records, you then suddenly discover that there is nothing any man can do to shake you.

It is when lack of contentment has led you to do something that you shouldn't have done that you become afraid. Jesus Christ said

Hereafter l will not talk much with you for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

John 14:30

If you are content with whatever God gives you, then you will not go after what the devil is offering you. In Luke 4:2-8, the devil offered Jesus a lot of riches and influence even though Jesus was hungry and tired at the time the offer was made, He did not take the offer because He was content with what God had given to Him. If you know that the Lord has prosperity planned for you, then you will not spoil your chances of getting that prosperity by being covetous now. Not being content has made many people steal thousands and lost the billions that God was planning to give them.

Lord, please teach me to be content

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Jeremiah 3- 5

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

Hymn 29: WILL YOUR ANCHOR HOLD IN THE STORM OF LIFE

1 Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,

When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?

When the strong tides lift, and the cables strain,

Will your anchor drift or firm remain?

Refrain:

We have an anchor that keeps the soul

Stedfast and sure while the billows roll,

Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,

Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

2 It is safely moored, ’twill the storm withstand,

For ’tis well secured by the Savior’s hand;

And the cables passed from His heart to mine,

Can defy the blast, through strength divine.

3 It will firmly hold in the straits of fear,

When the breakers have told the reef is near;

Though the tempest rave and the wild winds blow,

Not an angry wave shall our bark o’erflow.

4 It will surely hold in the floods of death,

When the waters cold chill our latest breath;

On the rising tide it can never fail,

While our hopes abide within the veil.

THEME: BE CONTENT I

MEMORISE:

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

1 Timothy 6:6

READ: 1 Timothy 6:6 -12

6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

MESSAGE

Money never satisfies those who love it. (Ecclesiastes 5:10-12). When you have a Mercedes S Class, you rejoice. However, the day you see someone with a Roll Royce, you become hungry for more. In any case, Ecclesiastes 5:11 says that when the money you have increases, the number of those who will spend it will also increase. Ecclesiastes 5:12 goes further to say that the people you call poor enjoy more blessings than the rich ones because nothing bothers their sleep, whereas the abundance of the rich hardly allows them rest. A lot of rich people even have problems eating because they have so much to choose from. Some rich people will spend several minutes trying to decide on what to eat whereas those of us who are not rich just thank God for what is available, and we eat it with joy.

1 Timothy 6:6-8 says godliness with contentment is great gain. The passage further says that if you have food to eat and clothes to wear, you should be content with that. No matter how big your house is, you can only sleep in one room at a time. No matter how many cars you have, you can only travel in one at a time.

We brought nothing into the world, and we will take nothing out when we are leaving. Whatever money or treasures you amass here on earth will be useless when it is time to leave.

There was a man who was so rich and so miserly that he used to go to the market by himself to buy foodstuff. Anytime his wife cooked his own pot of soup, he would take it into his room and lock it away from everyone else. He didn't trust the banks, so he kept his money in a room where no one ever entered. One day, he died and his Children came home. On getting home, they began looking for the key to the room where he kept his money. The youngest then said, "l know Papa, l am sure he must have swallowed the key before he died". So, they turned his corpse, started beating his back and the key popped out of his mouth.

All the wealth you are pursuing will be useless to you one day. Rather than focus on this thing that are temporal, why don't you put your gaze on eternal blessings (2 Corinthians 4:18). Don't lose eternal treasures because of your focus on material things. Be content with what you have.

KEY POINT

Spend your time on earth amassing treasures in heaven rather than treasures here which will be destroyed eventually.

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

HYMN 24: THROUGH THE LOVE OF GOD OUR SAVIOR

1 Through the love of God our Saviour,

all will be well.

Free and changeless is his favour,

all, all is well.

Precious is the blood that healed us,

perfect is the grace that sealed us,

strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,

all must be well.

2 Though we pass through tribulation,

all will be well.

Ours is such a full salvation,

all, all is well.

Happy, still in God confiding,

fruitful, if in Christ abiding,

holy, through the Spirit’s guiding,

all must be well.

3 We expect a bright tomorrow,

all will be well.

Faith can sing through days of sorrow,

'All, all is well.'

On our Father’s love relying,

Jesus every need supplying,

in our living, in our dying,

all must be well.

THEME: LETTER TO THE LAODICEAN CHURCH II

MEMORISE:

My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

Proverbs 3:11

READ: Revelation 3:19 -22

19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Proverbs 3:11 -12

11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

MESSAGE

As many as l love, l rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore and repent.

Revelation 3:19

Jesus told the Laodiceans that He was rebuking and chastening them because He loved them. If you love your son, you will chasten him when he is going the wrong way. It is only a father who hates his child that will watch him or her go the wrong way and keep quiet.

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chsteneth him be times.

Proverbs. 13:24

In 2020 when l came out to say the Lord was using the Coronavirus, to draw the world's attention back to Himself, many people said l was implying that God does not love the World anymore and He was punishing them. How dare l say that the Lord does not love the world when He Himself said in John 3:16 that He loves the world. It is because He love the world that He chastens us when we are going wrong. He can see the end from the beginning, He can see the destruction the world is calling to itself by ignoring Him, so He will chasten us. When God loves you, expect some strokes of cane whenever you step out of line because He chastens those He loves. However, when God decides to, wave a person, it is very dangerous.

When God has corrected a fellow several times but he or she refuses to change, He will leave such a person alone as he or she is headed for destruction (Romans 1:8, Proverbs 29:1).

Have you been ignoring God's rebuke over something you are doing wrong? Soon, you will stop hearing the rebuke as in the case of Ephraim, when God said he should be left alone (Hosea 4:17).

When God rebuke a person. He or she should immediately run back to Him in repentance because if He decides to keep quiet, that person is finished.

A word is enough for the wise.

KEY POINT

Change your ways immediately God rebukes and chastens you so that He will not leave you to perish.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SATURDAY AUGUST 20TH, 2022.

THEME: LETTER TO THE LAODICEAN CHURCH 1

MEMORISE:

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Luke 9:23

READ: Revelation 3:14 -18

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:

18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

Luke 9:23 -24

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

MESSAGE

The Laodiceans were very rich people, but they were lukewarm. Jesus said He would spew them out of His mouth because they said they were Rich and thus had need of nothing. Jesus told these people that they were poor and to be rich, they needed to come and buy gold tried in the fire from Him. To be clothed, they needed to buy white raiment from Him too. This reminds us of what we learnt when we discussed the letter to the Smyrna Church earlier this month (10th and 11th of August).

Jesus didn't say they should come and get from Him the gold tried in fire or the white raiment; He said they should come and buy it. In other words, they would have to give up something in order to get it. This is where the problem is with lukewarm Christian. They want convenient Christianity and that does not exist. They want to come to Church when they like and do only what is convenient for them in the word of God. If you are not giving something up to stand in the faith, you are a lukewarm Christian. If you discover that for some time now, the Lord has not taken anything from you that was difficult to give up - whether it is material or in your character, you are a lukewarm Christian. You don't get the white raiment, or the gold tried in the fire without giving something up. You don't become spiritually rich without giving up something in the physical.

If you don't tell anyone about Jesus, or you indulge in the lust of the eyes or pay people to do the work of God because you can no longer work for Him with your own hands as that will be beneath your social class, you are a lukewarm Christian. If you are finding it difficult to let go of a particular thing or pick up something new so as to gain spiritual riches, you had better change your ways now because the Lord says He will spew you out of His mouth.

God has spewed some people out of His mouth, but they don't know it. They think they are still in Christ, but they're long gone. I hope that today's message can help shed some light on whether you have become lukewarm or not.

I really do pray that the Almighty God shows you the area where you may need to reignite the fire, in Jesus' name.

PRAYER POINT

Father, any area where my fire has become lukewarm, please show me and help me to become hot for you again, in Jesus name.

HYMN 3: DEEPER DEEPER IN THE LOVE OF JESUS

1 Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus

Daily let me go;

Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,

More of grace to know.

Refrain

Oh, deeper yet, I pray,

And higher ev'ry day,

And wiser, blessed Lord,

In Thy precious, holy word.

2 Deeper, deeper! blessed Holy Spirit,

Take me deeper still,

Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,

And His perfect will.

3 Deeper, deeper! tho' it cost hard trials,

Deeper let me go!

Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,

Let me fruitful grow.

4 Deeper, higher, ev'ry day in Jesus,

Till all conflict past,

Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image

Perfected at last.
