Open Heavens Daily Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: FRIDAY JULY 8TH, 2022.

THEME: TOP UP YOUR FUEL TANK

MEMORISE:

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Mark 6:31

READ: Mark 6:30 -32

30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

31 And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

32 And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.

MESSAGE

One major thing about how a car works is the fact that cars need a constant supply of fuel to keep running. It does not matter how much fuel is in the tank; after it has run for a while, the fuel will be exhausted, and then it would not be able to run until the tank is refilled. Similarly, there is always a need for you to refill after you have given out so much. After expending a lot of energy, you need to go aside, rest and eat to regain strength. In the memory verse for today, Jesus told the disciples to go aside, and rest after their strenuous evangelism.

The reason many men of God are becoming less effective is that they don't rest. There are many people always thronging them because of anointing, but if they don't get adequate rest, they would break down. You may be very anointed, but you are still flesh and blood. Even Jesus Christ was so tired that He went to the inner part of the ship where no one could disturb Him and slept through a storm (Mark 4:37-38).

Sometimes, you also need to refill your anointing tank. After many major miracles that Jesus did, He went aside to the mountain to pray (Matthew 14:16-23). I told one of my sons one day to take things easy because he was attending so many programmes with little time for him to refill. He looked at me in a funny way, as if to say, "But l see you also working just as hard". I had to point his attention to the fact that l have only very few engagements in a certain period of every year, especially when we fast in the Redeemed Christian Church of God. You don't see me traveling during these periods. If l must minister somewhere, it would be close to my base because l am refilling my tank. If you don't refill the anointing and it goes dry, the people will notice and then you would realize that it is not really you they love, it is the anointing you carry.

Every car mechanic will tell you that it is dangerous to run your car on an empty tank. If you do, the fuel pump would suck up some debris and that can cause serious damage to your car. Don't run around empty. When you don't take time to refill your energy or anointing tank, you are endangering your life.

ACTION POINT

Always take out time to refill your tank, whether it is knowledge, anointing, energy or whatever you expend.

1 Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus

Daily let me go;

Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,

And higher ev'ry day,

And wiser, blessed Lord,

In Thy precious, holy word.

2 Deeper, deeper! blessed Holy Spirit,

Take me deeper still,

Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,

And His perfect will.

3 Deeper, deeper! tho' it cost hard trials,

Deeper let me go!

Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,

Let me fruitful grow.

4 Deeper, higher, ev'ry day in Jesus,

Till all conflict past,

Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image

Perfected at last.

THEME: GET REPORTS II

MEMORISE:

So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Romans 14:12

READ: Revelation 2:1 -7

1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.

MESSAGE

The Bible reading for yesterday showed us how Jesus delegated some assignments to His disciples during His earthly ministry. The Bible reading for today, shows us that Jesus is still delegating responsibilities even now that He is seated at the right hand of the Father in Heaven. This time, He is getting the reports of the Pastors first hand and giving the report of their performance so that they can improve in the work that he has given them to do.

Now, you as a leader must constantly assess those who you delegated duties to and give them a report of their performance. Tell them where they are doing well and where they need to improve. Make sure you give this report in time before they go so far in doing the wrong thing to the point that all that would be left would be to suffer their consequences. In the bible reading for today, Jesus make sure that He gave the Angels of the churches a report of their performance before the consequences showed up. Whether they harkened to His report or not is another thing, but He gave them report.

As a delegate, when you don't pay attention to the reports your superiors give you, you end up suffering the consequences. My advice for you is that you don't even wait for them to give you a reports of your performance; go to your superior and ask, "Sir, how am I performing at the duties you gave me to do?" When the fellow then tells you your performance, you must make adjustments to ensure that you do more of what the reports says you're doing well. That way, you can avoid any consequences that would have come if you did not get a report quickly enough.

Beyond getting a report on what your delegate are doing, you also need a report from them on how you are doing too. A leader must not be afraid to get reports from those that he or she is leading. You can not see and understand the effects of all your actions and words, hence you need other people to give you a report on your own performances once in a while. If Jesus could ask His disciples for feedback on how people perceived Him (Matthew 16: 13-15), you are not too big to ask for feedback from those you are leading.

ACTION POINT

Ask your superior both in the office and church to give you an objective report about your performance so far and also advice you on how to improve in your duties.

HYMN 15: NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD

1 Now thank we all our God

with heart and hands and voices,

who wondrous things has done,

in whom his world rejoices;

who from our mothers' arms

has blessed us on our way

with countless gifts of love,

and still is ours today.

through all our life be near us,

with ever joyful hearts

and blessed peace to cheer us,

to keep us in his grace,

and guide us when perplexed,

and free us from all ills

of this world in the next.

3 All praise and thanks to God

the Father now be given,

the Son and Spirit blest,

who reign in highest heaven

the one eternal God,

whom heaven and earth adore;

for thus it was, is now,

and shall be evermore.

THEME: GET REPORTS I

MEMORISE:

And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

Mark 6:30

READ: Mark 6:7 -13, 30

7 And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits;

8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:

9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

10 And he said unto them, In what place soever ye enter into an house, there abide till ye depart from that place.

11 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

12 And they went out, and preached that men should repent.

13 And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.

30 And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

MESSAGE

Delegation is very important principle in leadership. Since the leader is only one man, he cannot achieve much except he delegates some of his duties to other people to do. I am the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God which is in over 190 nations of the world. It is absolutely impossible for me to be coordinating the activities of all the parishes in these nations directly, hence, I have to delegate to other Pastors to support me in doing the work. One mistake that many people make after delegating is to abandon the duties delegated in the hands of the ones delegated to. I have always said it that you don’t get what you expect, you get what you inspect. After you have delegated duties to people, you must check to be sure that they are carrying them out correctly. If you cannot check physically, then you must ensure that they bring you reports as detailed as that which the disciples gave to Jesus Christ in Mark 6:30, the Bible says they “told Him ALL things, both what they had done and what they had taught”. The report must cover every single thing that was done or said in executing the assignment given.

The Bible reading makes us understands that after every season of assignment or project, there must be a gathering where everyone gives a report of what they did. After every service, every worker ought to give a report of how the service went and what challenges they had in each department. That way, before the next service or season of assignment, every challenge would have been addressed.

Nowadays, you can get your report first hand directly on your phone. Many a time, when I am outside the country, I have called the Pastor at the Headquarters of The Redeemed Christian of God in Nigeria to say, “Well done, the sermon today was powerful”. At first, he was surprised as to how I could have heard the sermon, but what I just did was to log on the Church’s media page to watch it live. I got  my report on what he was teaching the people first hand on my phone. You can also do the same if you set up a good reporting structure for the people you are leading, leveraging the technology available to us now.

KEY POINT

Delegate, but don't abandon your duties.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 95- 98

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

HYMN 6: HO MY COMRADES SEE THE SIGNAL

1. Ho, my comrades, see the signal, waving in the sky!

Reinforcements now appearing, victory is nigh.

Refrain:

“Hold the fort, for I am coming,”

Jesus signals still;

Wave the answer back to heaven,

“By Thy grace we will.”

2. See the mighty host advancing,

Satan leading on,

Mighty ones around us falling,

courage almost gone!

3. See the glorious banner waving,

Hear the trumpet blow!

In our Leader’s Name we

triumph over every foe.

4. Fierce and long the battle rages,

but our help is near,

Onward comes our great Commander,

cheer, my comrades, cheer!

THEME: REMOVE FAITH KILLERS

MEMORISE:

As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

Mark 5:36

READ: Mark 5:23 -43

23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.

28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

MESSAGE

Something very interesting happened between Jesus and Jairus in the Bible reading for today, When someone came from Jairus’ house to tell him that his daughter was dead, Jesus did not allow Jairus to respond; He told him specifically, “Don’t be afraid, only believe”. We see that everything He did before He woke the girl up from death was to remove faith killers. He knew that if Jairus had allowed fear to creep in when he was told that his daughter was dead, the miracle would not happen. He saw that all the people in the house that were crying were faithless and if Jairus and his wife looked at them, they would kill their faith. Jesus thus sent them all out before He could perform the miracle. It could be that the reason you have not gotten that miracle from God yet is that you have so many faith killers around you. Believe me honestly, if you keep hanging around these faith killers, they will hinder you from reaching your goals. You therefore have to remove them from your life.

Go away from places and people whose conversations kill your faith. If you keep listening to them, they will eventually hinder you from achieving your goal. If all that the people around you keep talking about is how things are bad and cannot be better, you had better change location. Move to a place where you will hear people telling you that things will be better, where they will tell you that your goals are achievable, where you will stop hearing, “No, it is not possible”, but start hearing “Yes, it is possible”.

I for one have always had big dreams, dreams that seem impossible when people hear them. Whenever someone laughs at my dreams, I tell them, “You just watch and see”, then I take a step back from the fellow so that they don’t kill my faith. Eventually when the dreams begin to come to pass, it will now be my turn to laugh. I have always said it: if people don’t laugh at your dreams, then they are not big enough. It is when your dream is so big that it is not possible to achieve it without the help of God that you have just started dreaming. Don’t mind those who have tried to kill your dreams in the past. Ignore them, put your faith in God and watch Him make your dreams come to pass.

KEY POINT

Stay away from people whose words and actions can kill your faith.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Psalm 91-94

AUTHOR: PASTOR E. A ADEBOYE

HYMN12: MY FAITH LOOKS TO THEE

1 My faith looks up to thee,

thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine.

Now hear me while I pray;

take all my guilt away;

O let me from this day

be wholly thine!

2 May thy rich grace impart

strength to my fainting heart;

my zeal inspire!

As thou hast died for me,

oh, may my love to thee

pure, warm, and changeless be,

a living fire!

3 While life's dark maze I tread,

and griefs around me spread,

be thou my guide.

Bid darkness turn to day,

wipe sorrow's tears away,

nor let me ever stray

from thee aside.

4 When ends life's transient dream,

when death's cold, sullen stream

shall o'er me roll,

blest Savior, then, in love,

fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above,

a ransomed soul!
