Open Heavens Daily Devotional by Pastor E.A. Adeboye

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: MONDAY DECEMBER 5TH, 2022.

THEME: GRATITUDE AND TESTIMONIES

MEMORISE:

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Revelation 12:11

READ: 1 Samuel 17:34 -37

34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

MESSAGE

The elders have an adage that says, "The child who is grateful for yesterday's blessing will receive another". You must be grateful, not just because God has already done a lot for you, but to open the door for what He will yet do. Some people lose their miracles because they are ungrateful. They lose the support of the most High God because they cannot just say 'Thank you.' Those who constantly remember His mercies always experience more and more. Blessings always pursue and overtake them.

Remembering His mercies will help you to develop mountain-moving faith. In Mark 11:22-23, Jesus said if you have faith in God, then you can  command mountains to move and they will obey. It is established that God does not change, as we see in Malachi 3:6 where He said, "For l am the Lord, l change not...". We also see in Hebrews 13:8 that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Both scriptures point to the fact that if God did a miracle yesterday, He can do it again today. Thus the more of His benefits you remember, the greater your faith and the more He can do for you. Once you can remember His track record concerning any situation, whenever that situation comes to face you again, you would just laugh because you know you have a Daddy who has tackled it before and will do so again victoriously.

In our Bible reading today, David recounted Lord's benefits towards him and standing on that, he was sure that the same God who delivered him from the lion and the bear would take care of Goliath. If you can just remember one of God's miracles in your life, then you can be sure He will do another one. The devil had tried to tell me that the 3km-by-3km auditorium would not be completed. I laughed because that was what he said when we were building the first auditorium which was 100meters by 50meters. He said the same thing for the second and third, and now we are in the fourth, so l told him, "you are wasting your time; this 3km-by-3km is just a baby, the real big one is yet to come".

Consider whatever mountain that is blocking your way now as just another opportunity for a new testimony.

KEY POINT

Your testimonies about God's goodness and gratitude to Him will produce more miracles.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 Corinthians 12-14

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

HYMN 27: WHEN LIFE'S BILLOW YOU ARE TEMPEST TOSSED

1 When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain:

Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your blessings, see what God hath done;

Count your blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

2 Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,

And you will be singing as the days go by.

3 When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold.

Count your many blessings, money cannot buy

Your reward in heaven, nor your Lord on high.

4 So amid the conflict, whether great or small,

Do not be discouraged, God is over all;

Count your many blessings, angels will attend,

Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SUNDAY DECEMBER 4TH, 2022.

THEME: GOD HAS A PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE

MEMORISE:

“But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.”

Isaiah 64:8

READ: Jeremiah 18:1-6 (KJV)

1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter; so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

MESSAGE:

In our Bible reading for today, a potter was trying to make a vessel, but it became marred in his hand, so he decided to make another. I preached a sermon over 30 years ago titled "Seeing the Invisible" I gave an illustration in the sermon using a log of wood.

When you see a log of wood, you may not observe anything special, but a sculptor could look at it and visualise a lion. He would then take his hammer and chisel, chipping off a little here, a little there. Eventually, the head of the lion would appear.

In the course of the sculptor's work, the wood could split open suddenly, in which case he could then say to it "Well, I wanted to make a lion out of you, but it looks like I would only be able to make a cat because you have cracked open in a way I did not intend". He would then get to work making the cat but, he discover another flaw in the wood, he may then say, "Okay, I will make a rat out of you". If he discovers even more flaws in the wood, he may then be compelled to use it as firewood.

Song of Solomon 2:15 says:

Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.

The little flaws you ignore in yourself can destroy God's purpose for your life.

If you fail to deal with these faults decisively, they will end up hindering God's plan for your life. You may have been told that you talk too much, yet are not doing anything about it. God may have warned you that you eat too much, yet you keep eating irresponsibly.

Maybe someone has even told you that you get angry too easily but you claim that people from your tribe are usually like that. These things, little as they may seem, will make it hard for God to fulfill His purpose in your life.

The Potter is very good at His craft, but the clay has to allow Potter's purpose to be fulfilled.

Check yourself: between last year and now, have you grown? Have you drop your bad habits? Have you picked up new habits that will help you fulfil God’s purpose for your life?

A new year is about to start; get rid of those little foxes that have been spoiling your vine. Don’t be an obstacle to your progress and the fulfilment of God’s plans in your life.

REFLECTION:

What are those weaknesses that you know you must get rid of? Begin to take action to get rid of them now.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 1 Corinthians 8-11

AUTHOR: PASTOR E A ADEBOYE

HYMNAL: HYMN 16 - O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST

1. O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Our shelter from the stormy blast,

And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Your throne

Your saints have dwelt secure;

Sufficient is Your arm alone,

And our defence is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood,

Or earth received her frame,

From everlasting You are God,

To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in Your sight

Are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night

Before the rising sun.

5. The busy tribes of flesh and blood,

With all their lives and cares,

Are carried downward by your flood,

And lost in foll'wing years.

6. Time, like an ever-rolling stream,

Bears all its sons away;

They fly forgotten, as a dream

Dies at the opening day.

7. O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come:

Be Thou our guard while troubles last,

And our eternal home.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE:  SATURDAY DECEMBER 3RD 2022

THEME:  PRAISE GOD

MEMORISE:

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

Psalms 124:2

READ: Psalms 124:1-8

1 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

2 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:

5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

MESSAGE

Today l want to help you praise God. I want to help you see why you really need to praise Him. You don't know all the battles God fights for you when you are lying helplessly asleep.

Not too long ago, a man brought his daughter to me at the Redemption Camp, all the way from Ilorin, because she told him she was a witch. He told me he doubted her at first but when she reached under her bed and brought out a pot of fresh human blood, he knew she was not joking.

After we prayed for her deliverance from the spirit of witchcraft, the father said, "Please, let her stay with you". I said   "Now you want to abandon the girl with me. If God had not been on your side all the days you have been sleeping with that child in the same house, would you be here today?

Do you know the true identity of the fellow you have been sleeping with in the same house?  Do you know how many wolves in sheep's clothing are living or working with you? Many of us have been guilty of ingratitude. God has been protecting us from numerous attacks from the forces of darkness that we know nothing of, yet some of us find it difficult to praise Him.

Imagine if God suddenly decides to remove His protective cover from you. You would be finished within 24 hours. You think there are no agent of darkness who have wished that you become so poor as to be eating garbage? They have sent many arrows but God protected you from all their attracts. If God had not been on your side, the enemy wou l'd have swallowed you up. If God had not been fighting your battles, where would you be now? Do you know how many times you have eaten poison, yet it did not kill you? Do you know how many times the enemy came in the night to make sure that you wouldn't see the following morning?

Today, l want you to push forward whatever you planned to do this morning and spend some time praising God. Praise Him from the bottom of your heart. Praise Him until you know, beyond all reasonable doubt, that He has heard you. Go ahead and just praise Him.

ACTION POINT

Spend at least 30 minutes praising the One who has been protecting you all these years.

HYMN 19: O WORSHIP THE KING ALL GLORIOUS ABOVE

1 O worship the King all-glorious above,

O gratefully sing his power and his love:

our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,

pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

2 O tell of his might and sing of his grace,

whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.

His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,

and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

3 Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?

It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;

it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,

and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

4 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,

in you do we trust, nor find you to fail.

Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end,

our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

5 O measureless Might, unchangeable Love,

whom angels delight to worship above!

Your ransomed creation, with glory ablaze,

in true adoration shall sing to your praise!

THEME: SIN OF INGRATITUDE

MEMORISE:

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Romans 1:21

READ: Numbers 11:1 -20

1 And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

2 And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.

3 And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.

4 And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

5 We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:

6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

7 And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.

8 And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.

9 And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.

10 Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.

11 And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

15 And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.

17 And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

18 And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat

19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;

20 But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?

MESSAGE

Ingratitude is a sin, and many people, including children of God, are guilty of it. Ingratitude was the cause of the original sin in the garden of Eden. Before God created man, He planted a garden and put everything there. The man just woke up to find that there was abundance everywhere. God said to Him, "Everything you see here is yours, there is only one tree I don't want you to touch, that is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil". The tempter then came and said, in essence, to the woman, "Forget all the things that God has given you, just focus on that one thing that you can't have. Don't be grateful for the rest". She obeyed him, ate the fruit and gave some to her husband who also ate it. This made God send them out of the garden and they had to start toiling to grow their food afterwards (Genesis 3). Their ingratitude led to them losing everything God had provided for them in Eden!

It is dangerous not to be grateful to God for all that He has done for you because more than anyone and anything else, He is really worthy to be praised. It is ingratitude to focus only on what we do not have yet and ignore all other benefits the Lord has blessed us with.

There was a very wealthy man who was also a great socialite. Unfortunately he had a stroke - the kind that can take away a man's voice. He was taken to the best hospital in London and it so happened that l was visiting the city around the same time. We had a mutual friend who asked me to come pray for the man. When we arrived at the hospital, he was sitting up in bed with his wife by his side, but then she stepped out briefly. After I had prayed for him, he tried to pass across a message to us by gesticulating. It took us about 30 minutes to understand that all he was trying to say was that his wife would soon be back.

Now, look at yourself. You don't need thirty minutes to make a simple statement. You can talk, you can shout, you can even sing. Why then don't you thank God for the gifts and benefits He has given you while you trust Him to provide those other things you are yet to receive? As we read in our Bible text for today, ingratitude can lead to destruction; it is a sin. Be grateful for what you have.

PRAYER POINT

Father, I am sorry for being ungrateful all this while; please have mercy on me.

Now go ahead and thank Him for all He has given you.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Romans 16-1 Corinthians 1-3

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

HYMN 25: TO GOD BE THE GLORY GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE

1 To God be the glory, great things He hath done,

So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,

Who yielded His life our redemption to win,

And opened the life-gate that all may go in.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the earth hear His voice;

Refrain:

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,

Let the people rejoice;

Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.

2 Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

To every believer the promise of God;

The vilest offender who truly believes,

That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.

3 Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,

And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

But purer, and higher, and greater will be

Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.
