OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 19TH, 2022.

THEME: WONDERFUL GOD ll

MEMORISE:

And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

Acts 19:11

READ: Acts 19:11 -16

11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

MESSAGE

Beyond making you a wonder, God can decide to use you as a vessel, through whom He will be doing wonders on earth. This is one thing every believer should pursue. In Acts 5:12-16, the Bible tells us about the great wonders that God performed through the apostles and how  He even healed the sick through Peter's shadow. If the shadow of a man begins to heal the sick, definitely that man has become a vessel for wonders.

If you want to become a vessel for wonders, you will have to really deny yourself of many things. Apostle Paul was without any doubt a vessel for wonders because his handkerchiefs and aprons worked miracles. 1 Corinthians 10:23 says:

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

If you want God to do wonders for you, you have to stay away from anything that is considered unlawful; however, if you want Him to do wonders through you, you have to stay away from even things that are lawful but not expedient. It is not unlawful to eat, but when you want Him to do wonders through you , fasting will become a regular practice for you. It is not unlawful to spend good time with friends chatting, but for those who God will do wonders through, they will spend more time with Him praying and studying their Bible than they spend with other people. They will give of their substance so much that people will say they are running crazy, they will serve in His house like they are being paid millions; in all, they will give themselves totally to God. These are the kinds of people through whom God will do wonders.

Moses, the man through whom God parted the Red Sea, spent more time on the mountain than below it. Indeed, he was so accustomed to the presence of God that the Lord spoke to Him face to face (Exodus 33:11). Elijah - the man who called down fire on Mount Carmel and shut the heavens over Israel for three years was always found on the mountain (2 Kings 1:9). You have to offer yourself a living sacrifice into God (Romans 12:1), if you want Him to do wonders through you.

KEY POINT

If you really want God to do wonders through you, be prepared to pay the price.

HYMN 3: DEEPER DEEPER IN THE LOVE OF JESUS

1 Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus

Daily let me go;

Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,

More of grace to know.

Refrain

Oh, deeper yet, I pray,

And higher ev'ry day,

And wiser, blessed Lord,

In Thy precious, holy word.

2 Deeper, deeper! blessed Holy Spirit,

Take me deeper still,

Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,

And His perfect will.

3 Deeper, deeper! tho' it cost hard trials,

Deeper let me go!

Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,

Let me fruitful grow.

4 Deeper, higher, ev'ry day in Jesus,

Till all conflict past,

Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image

Perfected at last.

THEME: WONDERFUL GOD l

MEMORISE:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

READ: Daniel 6:25 -27

25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.

26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

MESSAGE

God Himself is a wonder. Isaiah 9:6 says His name shall be called Wonderful. Wonderful means full of wonders. It is a wonder for a Virgin to conceive. It is a wonder for the King of kings to be born in a manger. It is a wonder for the One who controls the armies of heaven to allow Himself to be crucified. It is  a wonder for someone to rise from death. Not only is God a wonder, He does wonders. In our Bible reading for today, even a heathen king proclaimed that our God is the living God who works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth. He is a wonder; He can do wonders for you. In John 9:32, the blind man whose eyes were opened said:

Since the world began was it heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

The Almighty can heal any sickness you are experiencing: He can solve any problem. Jeremiah 32:27 says:

Behold, l am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

Nothing is too hard for God to do. If you live holy and ask Him, there is nothing He cannot do for you.

Beyond doing wonders for you, God can turn you into a wonder. In Mark 2:1-12, a paralyzed man was brought to Jesus through the roof and with just a word from the Lord, the man got up, completely whole. The Bible says in verse 12 that the people were amazed. He turned him into a wonder and He can do the same for you.

My story is proof that this God can turn anyone to a wonder. For a poor boy from a tiny village in Nigeria to be interacting with great leaders around the world, that is a wonder. If you want God to  make you a wonder, you need to first and foremost surrender your life to Jesus Christ, begin to live a holy lifestyle and consistently seek His face for mercy.

PRAYER POINT

Father, please have mercy on me and make me a wonder in my generation.

HYMN 22: SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER

1. Sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer!

That calls me from a world of care,

And bids me at my Father's throne

Make all my wants and wishes known.

In seasons of distress and grief,

My soul has often found relief,

And oft escape the tempter's snare

By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

2. Sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer!

Thy wings shall my petition bear

To him whose truth and faithfulness

Engage the waiting soul to bless;

And since He bids me seek His face

Believe His word, and trust His grace,

I'll cast on Him my every care,

And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

3. Sweet hour of prayer!

Sweet hour of prayer!

May I thy consolation share

Till, from mount Pisgah's lofty height,

I view my home and take my flight;

This robe of flesh I'll drop, and rise

To seize the ever lasting prize

And shout while passing through the air,

Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer.

THEME: TOUCHING GOD lll

MEMORISE:

Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Matthew 15:28

READ: Mark 10:46 -52

46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

MESSAGE

You can touch God with your prayers. In our Bible reading for today. Bartimaeus cried until Jesus stood still, Jesus was touched by Bartimaeus persistently calling Him.

There are gentlemanly prayers - which people pray softly, sophisticatedly, with big grammar and careful diction.

There are also prayers that can touch God - usually persistent in nature. In Luke 18:1-8, Jesus gave an example of a prayer that would definitely touch God. In fact, He said the prayer would touch even a wicked fellow, not to mention God.

Some people pray for a while and stop when they haven't gotten a miracle. Why are you stopping? Do you have another option apart from God? I have had the privilege of going to see some Presidents and when you get there you cannot be in a hurry. You get there before the time of appointment that was given to you, yet you may have to wait for some time before you get to see the President. On some occasions, it is the President who wanted to see me, yet l had to wait. How can you then go before the President of Presidents and say because He hasn't attended to your request yet, you want to leave? If you leave, who will be affected? God remains God whether you pray or not, but you are nothing without Him. When you tarry in the place of prayer, He is touched and then gives you whatever you want.

In Matthew 15:22-28 we read the story of a woman who kept crying to Jesus to heal her daughter. She cried so much that Jesus' disciples were irritated and asked Him to, send her away. This did not stop her from praying. At last, Jesus was touched and she got her miracle. How desperate are you to get your miracle? If you are really desperate, it will show in the way you pray. It will show in how long you pray. Many people are still struggling with their problems because they stopped praying too early. Let that not be your story.

KEY POINT

If you want to touch God with your prayers, then you have to pray persistently.

THEME: TOUCHING GOD ll

MEMORISE:

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Hebrews 13:15

READ: 2 Chronicles 1:6 -12

6 And Solomon went up thither to the brasen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand burnt offerings upon it.

7 In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.

8 And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.

9 Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.

10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:

12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.

MESSAGE

You can touch God through Your worship. In Acts 16:25-26, at midnight, Paul and Silas sang praises to the Most High God, in prison. God saw them praising Him while they were bound in prison and was touched. Instead of grumbling, they praised God  and this made Him force open the prison doors. Apostle Paul was a man who knew how to touch God through worship. He is the one who wrote about the sacrifice of praise in Hebrews 13:15:

By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

What is the sacrifice of praise? The sacrifice of praise according to the above Scripture is the fruit of our lips. When you put this side-by-side with Matthew 7:16 which says "Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?" you would then see that such a sacrifice does not come from lips that only praise God once in a while, or that only praise Him when things are going well. The sacrifice of praise comes from lips that glorify Him all the time, lips which only bear worship and thanksgiving to the Most High God, lips that have been sacrificed on the altar of praise to the Lord.

You want to touch God with your worship? Give Him a sacrifice of praise from your lips which are dedicated to praising Him at all times.

God will however, not accept praise from a sinner because His eyes cannot behold iniquity (Habakkuk 1:13). As a matter of fact, sin hides His face from sinners and He will not hear them (Isaiah 59:1-2) unless they repent and forsake their wrongdoings.

Surrender your life to Jesus Christ today if you have not done so, then you can rest assured that when you worship Him, He will hear you and you will indeed move Him to perform wonders in your life.

KEY POINT

Make praising God your lifestyle.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: John 18-19

AUTHOR: PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

HYMN 19: O WORSHIP THE KING ALL GLORIOUS ABOVE

1 O worship the King all-glorious above,

O gratefully sing his power and his love:

our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days,

pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

2 O tell of his might and sing of his grace,

whose robe is the light, whose canopy space.

His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,

and dark is his path on the wings of the storm.

3 Your bountiful care, what tongue can recite?

It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;

it streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,

and sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

4 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,

in you do we trust, nor find you to fail.

Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end,

our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

5 O measureless Might, unchangeable Love,

whom angels delight to worship above!

Your ransomed creation, with glory ablaze,

in true adoration shall sing to your praise!
