THEME: TEACH THEM TO STUDY

MEMORISE:

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

Proverbs 4:7

READ: Proverbs 4:7 -9

7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.

8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.

9 She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

MESSAGE

Psalm 127:3 says that children are the heritage of the Lord; in other words, they belong to the Lord and we are only their caretakers. It is important then that as a caretaker, you take good care of what has been placed in your hands. You must teach your children not to be fools, or else, you would have failed as a parent. Our memory verse today describes wisdom as the ‘principal thing’ and then proceeds to instruct us to obtain it along with understanding. This implies that wisdom must be sought, hence the call to teach our children and wards to seek it.

Teach your children that wisdom is greater than strength (Ecclesiastes 9:16). Since wisdom is the correct application of knowledge, you must teach them to study and acquire knowledge. Don’t let your children spend all day watching television and playing games. They must study; nobody becomes great without studying. It is how hard you have studied that will determine how high you will go. As a teacher at Ondo Boys’ High School in 1963, I was asked to teach 35 periods. There was another teacher in the school who was a graduate but was only teaching 21 periods yet earning 4 times as much as I was. In spite of this, he was still grumbling. I said to him, “Sir, I am teaching 35 periods, you are teaching 21, yet you are receiving four times my salary and you are still complaining”. He drew me close and patted me on the head, then said, “My boy, you don’t understand; I am being paid for what I have already done”.

That was the day I decided that I would go to University, no matter the cost.

It doesn’t matter how a child starts, it doesn’t matter how poor the parents are; if that child studies and works hard, he or she will stand with kings. If you don’t believe me, find a way to read about my background and then compare it to where I am today. I pray for your children: they will not end up as failures in Jesus’ name. You however, have a part to play for that prayer to be answered; you must teach them to study. You may say, “Oh, it doesn’t matter if they study or not, I am already preparing their inheritance; they will never lack anything”. You had better not fool yourself. Only a wise child can manage resources correctly. I pray that your children will not destroy your legacy when you are gone, in Jesus’ name.

ACTION POINT

Remove everything around your children that distract them from studying and create a schedule that will ensure they study more than they play.

HYMN 20: ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS

1. Onward, Christian soldiers! Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before. Christ, the royal Master, Leads against the foe; Forward into battle, See his banners go!

Refrain:

Onward, Christian soldiers!Marching as to war, With the cross of Jesus Going on before.

2. At the sign of triumph Satan’s host doth flee; On, then, Christian soldiers, On to victory. Hell’s foundations quiver At the shout of praise; Brothers, lift your voices, Loud your anthems raise.

3. Like a mighty army Moves the Church of God; Brothers, we are treading Where the Saints have trod. We are not divided; All one body we: One in hope and doctrine, One in charity.

4. Onward, then, ye people; Join our happy throng. Blend with ours your voices In the triumph song: Glory, laud, and honor Unto Christ, the King. This through countless ages Men and angels sing.

THEME: LOVE FOREWARNS

MEMORISE:

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

1 Thessalonians 5:2

READ: Matthew 24:43 -51

43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;

50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

MESSAGE

Many a time, God would warn man about what was going to happen or about the consequences of his actions. Before Cain took the action that led to him killing his brother, God warned him about it in Genesis 4:6-7:

And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? And why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Even though God warned him, Cain did not change his ways He killed his brother and had to face the consequences.

When Jesus Christ was about to be taken away from His disciples to die for the sins of the world, He warned that Peter would deny Him. Peter was boastful rejoicing in his own ability. Peter failed like the Lord warned but thank God that the mercy of God found and restored him. May the mercy of God find you today and restore to you all you have lost, in Jesus’ name.

Today, out of love, God still warns man about the dangers of his own actions. He said in Revelation 22:12:

And behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Some people think the Lord Jesus was just telling stories, simply because he has not come yet. 1 Peter 3:9 tells us why He hasn’t come yet:

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

My beloved, when the Bible says that the rapture will take place suddenly, it is not a mere story. The word of God is settled forever (Psalm 119:89). If He says He is coming, He is coming. I hope you will not be amongst those who will be full of regrets when that day comes.

REFLECTION

How are you preparing for rapture?

HYMN 24: THROUGH THE LOVE OF GOD OUR SAVIOUR

1 Through the love of God our Saviour,

all will be well.

Free and changeless is his favour,

all, all is well.

Precious is the blood that healed us,

perfect is the grace that sealed us,

strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,

all must be well.

2 Though we pass through tribulation,

all will be well.

Ours is such a full salvation,

all, all is well.

Happy, still in God confiding,

fruitful, if in Christ abiding,

holy, through the Spirit’s guiding,

all must be well.

3 We expect a bright tomorrow,

all will be well.

Faith can sing through days of sorrow,

'All, all is well.'

On our Father’s love relying,

Jesus every need supplying,

in our living, in our dying,

all must be well.

THEME: LOVE PROTECTS

MEMORISE:

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31

READ: John 10:11 -15

11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

MESSAGE

When Jesus was physically leaving the earth, He assured His disciples that He would never leave them that He would always be with them until the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). This gives us - His disciples, great comfort. If He had not said until the end of the age, you would wonder if He was protecting us now from all the evil in the world. However, He said His protection will continue until the end of the age. He assures us in Isaiah 60:2:

For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Although there is much chaos in the world, there is no need to panic. If you are truly a child of God, Jesus already assured us in John 16:33 that although there may be tribulations in the world, we should be cheerful because He has overcome the world.

If anyone can testify about the protection of God, it is I. Many years ago, during one of our Holy Ghost services in Nigeria, as I got on the altar to preach, the Lord opened my ears and I heard a conversation going on between two witches who were preparing to launch an attack on my life at that moment. I announced that I could hear the two witches and if they did not want to die within 7 days, they should come out and repent. To the amazement of the congregation, the witches came out. In 2 Kings 6:14-17, Elisha’s servant was afraid when he saw an entire army surrounding them ready to attack. Elisha however, was relaxed because he knew that the One protecting him was far greater than the army outside his city. He prayed for God to open the servant’s eyes and when the young man saw the number of heavenly soldiers who were on their side, he became relaxed too.

If you have been toying with sin, you have actually been toying with your life because the Good Shepherd will only protect His sheep. Only those who are truly children of God are safe in the secret place of the Most High God (Psalm 91:1).

PRAYER POINT

Heavenly Father, help me to continually dwell in Your secret place, so that I may constantly abide under the shadow of Your protection in Jesus name.

HYMN 3: DEEPER, DEEPER IN LOVE WITH JESUS

1 Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus

Daily let me go;

Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,

More of grace to know.

Refrain:

Oh, deeper yet, I pray,

And higher ev'ry day,

And wiser, blessed Lord,

In Thy precious, holy word.

2 Deeper, deeper! blessed Holy Spirit,

Take me deeper still,

Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,

And His perfect will.

3 Deeper, deeper! tho' it cost hard trials,

Deeper let me go!

Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,

Let me fruitful grow.

4 Deeper, higher, ev'ry day in Jesus,

Till all conflict past,

Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image

Perfected at last.

THEME: LOVE GIVES

MEMORISE:

Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

1 John 3:16

READ: Romans 8:31 -37

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

MESSAGE

In 1 Corinthians 13:13, faith, hope and love were described as ‘abiding’. The verse however, went further to say that love is the greatest amongst them. God loved us first before we could love Him in return (1 John 4:19). When a person has a good understanding of God’s love for him or her, it is as if a veil is removed from the fellow’s eyes; he or she would suddenly begin to love God in return and then become free from all the shackles of this sinful world. God loves us so much that He considers nothing too big to give to us. Romans 8:32 says:

He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

If God could give us the greatest gift ever - His Son (John 3:16), nothing is too big for Him to give to you. Nothing! God gives to us because He is committed to loving us. He expects us to love our neighbours and give to them too. 1 John 4:21 says:

And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.

How much do you love those around you? How much do you love your colleagues in the office? One day, a young man came for one of our Holy Ghost Services in Nigeria and saw his aunt in the middle of the crowd. He screamed, “Aunty, so you come here too? She said, “I just started coming” and he said, “Oh, I have been coming for many years now”. She became angry with him because he had found the light a long time ago but didn’t introduce her to Christ. She was furious that he didn’t warn her that she was on the way to hell.

Are you going to be heartless too and watch your family members go to hell? Why not tell them about Jesus? Why not invite them to Church with you? Why not make it a duty to give them this devotional every year, hoping that even if they refuse to surrender their lives to Christ, one day God will lead them to read it and see something that will touch them there. If you truly love your neighbor, you will lead them to read it and see something that will touch them there. If you truly love your neighbor, you will lead them to that gift the Lord has given to you - salvation.

KEY POINT

The greatest gift you can give to show someone that you love them is the gospel; don't hold it back.

HYMN 30: WONDERFUL STORY OF LOVE

1 Wonderful story of love!

Tell it to me again;

Wonderful story of love!

Wake the immortal strain.

Angels with rapture announce it,

Shepherds with wonder receive it;

Sinner, O won’t you believe it?

Wonderful story of love!

Refrain:

Wonderful! Wonderful!

Wonderful story, Wonderful story of love!

2 Wonderful story of love!

Though you are far away;

Wonderful story of love!

Still he doth call today.

Calling from Calvary’s mountain,

Down from the crystal bright fountain,

E’en from the dawn of creation;

Wonderful story of love!

3 Wonderful story of love!

Jesus provides a rest;

Wonderful story of love!

For all the pure and blest;

Rest in those mansions above us,

With those who’ve gone on before us,

Singing the rapturous chorus;

Wonderful story of love!

THEME: GOD IS FAITHFUL IV

MEMORISE:

And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Revelation 22:12

READ: Mark 10:28 -30

28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

MESSAGE

God’s faithfulness extends even to His promise to reward every man and woman according to their works.

This means that the fulfillment of Jesus’ second coming will be accompanied by the award of certain rewards. The implication of this is that those lazy believers who are not serious about the work of the Kingdom of God will live, though in heaven, to regret their idle life of holiness.’ The apostle wrote that there will be great rewards for the ministers of the gospel who take care of the flock of God.

And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

I Peter 5:4

In our Bible text of today, we read about the positive response of Jesus Christ to Peter’s enquiry about what would become of their labour of following Him. The Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) assures all His followers of great rewards and above all, eternal life. This is the crux of Christian faith - eternal life. Beloved, is eternal life your motive for following Jesus Christ? Don’t lose this eternal promise. The Bible further promises that believers in Christ shall have eternal life (John 3:16-18). However, there are categories of rewards after this life. Some may not even get anything. This is implied in the description of the work that we do while still in this body. Paul the Apostle wrote:

If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

I Corinthians 3:14-15

Beloved, remember that God is not unrighteous to forget you labour of love (Hebrews 6:10). We must not be weary in well-doing because our reward is sure (Galatians 6:9).

PRAYER POINT

Father, please keep me believing and serving so that no one else will take my reward in Your kingdom, in the mighty name of Jesus.

HYMN 4: GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

1 Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,

There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:

“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided,

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

2 Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,

Join with all nature in manifold witness

THEME: GOD IS FAITHFUL III

MEMORISE:

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

John 14:3

READ: John 14:1 -4

1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

MESSAGE

One of the promises of God which His faithfulness will bring to pass is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Our Lord Jesus Christ gave a promise on behalf of the Holy Trinity that He would return to take His followers home according to the memory verse of today which is also part of our Bible text. It is unfortunate that many people and particularly some theologians are now saying that Jesus Christ will not return physically again! Beloved, if you are being carried away by this satanic teaching, please reconsider; read your Bible again. Do not believe this doctrine of the devil. God is faithful and will never make a promise that He will not fulfil. Jesus said, “…if it were not so, I would have told you…” (John 14:2). He know that there would be scoffers, deceivers and doubters of His second coming. Beloved, I am declaring to you this day that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is coming back and very soon too. The angels corroborated the promises He made to His disciples on behalf of the Holy Trinity in Acts 1:10-11:

And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand you gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

The implications of the above Scripture are two-fold. One, those who think Jesus Christ will not be faithful to His promise of the second coming should think again. This is because when He eventually returns, they will be put to shame unless they repent. Two, those who will not believe in the faithfulness of God in regarding Christ’s second coming will not get themselves ready and when they die in this unbelief, it will be too late to repent as it is appointed for man to die once, after which is judgment (Hebrews 9:27)

Everyone who surrenders their lives to Jesus and abides in Him will become a new creature. Old things will pass away, all things will become new and they will no longer struggle with sin (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Beloved, get prepared; live righteously through faith in Jesus Christ - the Son of the living God.

PRAYER POINT

Father, please increase my belief in Your faithfulness, in Jesus name.
