THEME: GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN

MEMORISE:

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Isaiah 6:8

READ: Joshua 14:12-14

12 Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.

13 And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

14 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day, because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel.

MESSAGE

The implication of Caleb’s request in our Bible reading today is that he was asking for a new responsibility and assignment. It should be recalled that though the Lord had declared that the promise land belonged to the children of Israel, they still had the responsibility of acquiring it. The original settlers would not give up the land they had occupied from time immemorial, hence the need tor the Israelites to fight to take what had been divinely declared to be theirs.

One of the most difficult types of lands to acquire is a mountain, yet Caleb told Joshua, “Give me this mountain”. The Lord had assured Caleb that He would give that part of the land to him for his good report of faith. This faith persisted even into his old age; he still believed in the faithfulness of God to give him the mountain part of the Promised Land.

In today’s reading, we learn that, “Lord, give me this mountain" means, Give me this assignment and by Your grace, I shall accomplish it”. For example, when you pray that God should make you His minister, you are asking for a great task but I can assure you that His grace will be sufficient for you, according to 1 Timothy 3 :1 which says, “If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work”. “Give me this mountain” could also mean, “Make me a missionary and I shall win the world for You” or “Make me Your disciple and I shall do greater works for You”.

Desiring to work for God is the best thing that can happen to a child of God. However, it is a great responsibility, for example, in 1 Timothy 3:2 the Bible says, “A bishop then must be blameless…” among other qualifications. In other words, living a sinless life is part of the price of doing God’s work. In 2 Timothy 2:20-21 we read that only those who purge themselves of the impurities of life can carry out divine assignments successfully. Our memory verse today reveals God’s search of vessels unto honour, for which Isaiah volunteered. This was preceded by a process of purification after admitting his unworthiness (Isaiah 6:5-7). Beloved, for you to be used by God to successfully execute divine assignments, you must undergo spiritual purification through a new birth and sanctification by the blood of Jesus Christ (1John 1:8-9).

PRAYER POINT

Lord, prepare me a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true. With thanksgiving, I will be a living sanctuary for you in Jesus name.

1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus

Daily let me go;

Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,

And higher ev'ry day,

And wiser, blessed Lord,

In Thy precious, holy word.

Take me deeper still,

Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,

And His perfect will.

Deeper let me go!

Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,

Let me fruitful grow.

4 Deeper, higher, ev'ry day in Jesus,

Till all conflict past,

Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image

Perfected at last.

THEME: THE WORK OF GRACE II

MEMORISE

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

2 Corinthians 9:8

READ: Isaiah 49:24-26

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

25 But thus saith the LORD, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

MESSAGE

Today, we shall continue with the study we commenced yesterday on the work of grace in the life of man. In our Bible reading we are assured that there is someone who can deliver the lawful captive. However, this is only achievable through grace. When darkness envelopes an individual, the fellow’s life becomes meaningless. The  power of darkness is from the devil. Those whose lives are engulfed in darkness can never experience peace, joy and abundant life.

There is however, good news in Colossians 1:12-15 which tells us that our God has delivered us from the power of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom of His Son. This kingdom is the Kingdom of light because the Bible says concerning Jesus Christ:

Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 8:12

Beloved, in what areas of your life have you been experiencing the devastating influence of the power of darkness? Seek the grace that brought salvation to all men according to Titus 2:11-12 which says, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world”. The lessons from this scripture are many.

The grace of God brings salvation - all-round salvation for that matter. This grace is equally teaching and empowering us to shun a sinful life and worldliness. This is why, when Jesus Christ saw the man who was healed of what hitherto had been described as an incurable disease, later in the temple, He told him, “…Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee” (John 5:14). As freely as the work of grace flows towards us, we must never take it for granted.

May the work of grace flow freely in your life, in the mighty name of Jesus.

PRAYER POINT

Lord, please deliver me from all forms of captivity by your work of grace, in Jesus name.

HYMN 2: CONQUERORS AND OVERCOMERS NOW ARE WE

 1. Conquerors and overcomers now are we,

Thro’ the precious blood of Christ we've victory,

If the Lord be for us, we can never fail;

Nothing 'gainst his mighty pow'r can e'er prevail.

Refrain:

Conquerors are we, thro’ the blood, thro’ the blood;

God will give us victory, thro’ the blood, thro’ the blood,

Thro’ the Lamb for sinners slain,

Yet who lives and reigns again,

More than conquerors are we,

More than conquerors are we.

2. In the name of Israel's God we'll onward press,

Overcoming sin and all unrighteousness;

Not to us, but unto him the praise shall be,

For salvation and for blood-bought victory.

3. Unto him that overcometh shall be giv’n

Here to eat of hidden manna sent from heav'n;

Over yonder he the victor's palm shall bear,

And a robe of white, and golden crown shall wear.

THEME: THE WORK OF GRACE I

MEMORISE

For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

1 Peter 3:18

READ: 1 Timothy 1:15 -17

15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

MESSAGE

Every sinner belong to the Devil (1 John 3:8) and is a servant of sin (Romans 6:16). A servant in this context is like a prisoner who has lost his or her freedom. For us to be free, we need grace and this can only be found in the truth of the word of God according to John 8:31-32. The difference between a sinner and a saint is that the saint hears the truth and embraces it while the sinner hears but ignores it. For example, the Bible says:

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I John 1:8-9.

The above Scripture contains the truth that set me free some decades ago. Coming from a highly disciplined family, I grew up as a moralist and so thought I was far better than many people. I did not think I was in any serious sin that could warrant my need for a saviour. However, the grace of God beamed upon my soul and when I saw my filthy life of hypocrisy, I cried out for salvation.

It is grace of God that brings salvation to humanity (Titus 2:1); however, anyone who trivializes the grace, of, God is dead already. Noah found grace before God (Genesis 6:8), and this led to his salvation. If, however, Noah toyed with the grace, he would have perished as well.

Indeed, it is by grace that we are saved and we must never deny its importance in performing all God given assignment as we see in 2 Corinthians 9:8:

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you;  that ye, always having all things, may abound to every good work.

Beloved, the Lord has already made His grace abound towards you by giving His only begotten Son - Jesus Christ as a ransom for your soul(John 3:16). Forsake your sins today and access this divine provision by surrendering your life to Jesus Christ. It is the only way to escape the eternal damnation that awaits everyone who rejects the grace of God. (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

PRAYER POINT

Father, thank you for your grace that abound towards me. Please Lord, help me make the best of it, in Jesus name.

THEME: NO GOING BACK

MEMORISE:

And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Luke 9:62

READ: Luke 9:57-62

57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.

62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

MESSAGE

Situations in the world today can make any child of God backslide if he or she is not well-grounded in His word. Knowing this, Jesus Christ told the disciples in John 16:33, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world".

Just after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, Peter decided to return to his former trade of fishing along with some other disciples (John 21:3). Many things could have been responsible for their decision to abandon their calling in Christ as evangelists to go back to fishing. Peter and the other disciples that followed him must have felt the future was bleak since their expectation of Jesus as the political Messiah was dashed at His crucifixion. They may also have been disappointed over the fact that, upon His resurrection, Jesus Christ did not restore the sovereignty of Israel as a nation, as expected. This made them ask, "....Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel?" (Acts 1:6).

Beloved, what may cause you to contemplate going back into the world? Is it joblessness, a troublesome spouse, a failed business, yet-to-be-fulfilled dreams, betrayal from friends or loved ones? Take a cue from Paul -an apostle of Christ, when he asked rhetorically:

Who shall separate us from the love of  Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ...Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

Romans 8:35, 37.

Jesus Christ in our memory verse today warns us against going back when He says that, having decided to work for the Lord, anyone who goes back to the world is not fit for the Kingdom (Luke 9:62). Therefore beloved, going back because of what you are passing through is not an option because the Bible says that we should hold fast that profession of our faith without wavering (Hebrews 10:23). The good news is that glory is waiting ahead of you if only you can hold on to Christ and never go back to the world (Colossians 1:27, Psalm 30:5).

HYMN 12: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

1 My faith looks up to thee,

thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine.

Now hear me while I pray;

take all my guilt away;

O let me from this day

be wholly thine!

2 May thy rich grace impart

strength to my fainting heart;

my zeal inspire!

As thou hast died for me,

oh, may my love to thee

pure, warm, and changeless be,

a living fire!

3 While life's dark maze I tread,

and griefs around me spread,

be thou my guide.

Bid darkness turn to day,

wipe sorrow's tears away,

nor let me ever stray

from thee aside.

4 When ends life's transient dream,

when death's cold, sullen stream

shall o'er me roll,

blest Savior, then, in love,

fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above,

a ransomed soul!
