OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: FRIDAY 11TH MARCH 2022

THEME: SHINNING AS THE BRIGHT AND MORNING STAR I.

MEMORISE

I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Revelation 22:16

READ: Revelation 22:12 -16

12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

MESSAGE

Jesus introduced Himself as the Bright and Morning Star in our Bible reading today before making some important declarations concerning His expectations from us as well as our promised reward. HE was very clear about His expectations because not only does He want us to be like Him, He also wants us to perform greater works (John 12:14).

To become shinning stars like our Lord Jesus, we must acknowledge that we were filthy sinners before we encounter Jesus (1 John 1:7-9); Romans 3:23). This knowledge will take us to Calvary where the Bright and Morning Star bled and died for us to access forgiveness and cleansing. This is when we confess and repent of our sins. Two, we must live strictly by Hs standards. Many people want to benefit from the innumerable blessings of the Bright and Morning Star including shinning in the darkness of this world, but they are not ready to surrender completely to His Lordship. If Adam and Eve had known whom they belonged to, they would never have succumbed to the deceit of the devil which suddenly turned their day into night.

What are the characteristics of the Bright and Morning Star? He never sinned; hence,to shine like Him we too must live a sin-free life. Many may claim that this is impossible, but it is possible because the Bible says those who are born of God do not sin; indeed, they cannot sin because the seed of God is within them (1John 3:9). How? John 1:11-12 says that as many as believe Jesus He gives power to become children of God.

The Bright and Morning Star has never been overwhelmed by darkness; even in the day, He still shines brightly to the whole world. The Bible says, "And the light shineth in  darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not (John 1:5). Sickness is a form of darkness and Jesus Christ was never sick. I therefore declare that the Bright and Morning Star will make sickness history in your life.

Do you want to shine like the Bright and Morning Star? Give your life to Him first, and then begin to live strictly by His commandment.

PRAYER POINT

Father, please send your light upon me and let me begin to shine like my Lord- the Bright and Morning Star, in the mighty name of Jesus.

HYMN 13: MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS.

1 My hope is built on nothing less

than Jesus' blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

but wholly lean on Jesus' name.

Refrain:

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:

all other ground is sinking sand;

all other ground is sinking sand.

2 When darkness veils his lovely face,

I rest on his unchanging grace;

in every high and stormy gale,

my anchor holds within the veil.

3 His oath, his covenant, his blood,

support me in the whelming flood;

when all around my soul gives way,

he then is all my hope and stay.

4 When he shall come with trumpet sound,

O may I then in him be found:

dressed in his righteousness alone,

faultless to stand before the throne.

MEMORISE

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

Joshua 13:1

READ: Joshua 13:1 -6

1 Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

2 This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,

3 From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:

4 From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians, unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites:

5 And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

6 All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

MESSAGE

Yesterday we started to discuss numbering our days and we discovered that there are a lot of lessons in counting our days if we do it properly. Today we shall see one profound example of a person who did not achieve all that God asked him to do within the time given to him – Joshua. When Joshua had grown quite old the Lord gave him his performance scorecard and this is food for thought for all of us today.

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the Lord said unto him, Thou art old and striken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

Joshua 13:1

This was a divine assessment. This is because the Righteous Judge was the One giving the verdict.

To what extent have you achieved those goals you set for yourself when you newly became born again? The Lord reminded Joshua that his days of departure were near and yet, there was much land yet to be possessed. You may or may not be a pastor, but there are many souls around you yet unsaved. “Oh, I am not called to be an evangelist” you may say, but read what the Bible is saying to an early Church bishop and now to you today.

But watch thou in all things, endure affliction, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. 2 Timothy 4:5

You were planted in the Body of Christ for a specific assignment and it is taking you a very long time to start, not to talk of accomplishing it. You think you have the whole eternity to perform it? No. I appeal to you to settle down and execute your divinely ordained assignment. It may not be a pulpit assignment, but it is a divine assignment, nevertheless. That business given to you may be so as to give God a befitting sanctuary in your local assembly, yet even five years running, the building is still at the lintel level, whereas you are multiplying the number of your factories all over the place. Remember, do the work of the Lord now whilst it is still day because, when the night comes – when you are old and not as strong as you used to be, it would be too late to work (John 9:4)

PRAYER POINT

Father, please teach me to evaluate my life and give me wisdom to fulfill my destiny in Jesus name.

HYMN 4: GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

1 Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father,

there is no shadow of turning with thee.

Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;

as thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:

Great is thy faithfulness!

Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

all I have needed thy hand hath provided.

Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

2 Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon, and stars in their courses above

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

3 Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,

strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

THEME: NUMBER YOUR DAYS 1

MEMORISE

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Psalms 90:12

READ: Job 14:1 -2

Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

MESSAGE

There are many lessons we can learn when we number our days in other words, when we put a tally on our days in order to evaluate how we are faring. Numbering our days in whatever form such as birthdays, anniversaries of special events and so on can teach us great lessons and wisdom according to our memory verse today.

Why should we number our days? Our Bible reading for today gives us an answer. Man, born of a woman is of few days and even these few days are full of trouble. The Scripture likened man to a flower that blossoms then gets cut down and as a shadow that eventually disappears. These clearly show that man’s time on earth is short and hence must not be wasted.

We can count our days effectively by evaluating our lives, asking such questions as, “Do I have a goal at all? “What are my goals” “To what extent have I achieved my goals?” “Since I have a few days and these few days are full of challenges within and without, what am I doing in preparation for eternity?”

We can also number our days effectively by counting our blessing like the Psalmist did when he penned Psalm 103 – particularly verse 1 to 5. This will give us a sense of gratitude to God who has blessed us with multiple blessings even within our short stay here on earth. The Bible says:

For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. Hebrews 13:14-15

Another important reason we should number our days is the evaluation of how much work we have done for the Lord. When we consider the Great Commission (Mark 16:15) and remember that we have limited time on earth, it compels us to work harder and faster as the work of the Master demands urgency (John 9:4).

May the Almighty God help us to make excellent use of our time here on earth, in the mighty name of Jesus.

ACTION POINT

Ensure you evaluate your life carefully, count your blessings and name them one by one. Also, commit to doing more for the kingdom of God

HYMN 27: WHEN UPON LIFE'S BILLOWS YOU ARE TEMPEST TOSSED

1 When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,

When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,

Count your many blessings, name them one by one,

And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain:

Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your blessings, see what God hath done;

Count your blessings, name them one by one;

Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

2 Are you ever burdened with a load of care?

Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

Count your many blessings, ev'ry doubt will fly,

And you will be singing as the days go by.

3 When you look at others with their lands and gold,

Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;

Count your many blessings, money cannot buy

Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

MEMORISE:

Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

Ephesians 5:33

READ: Ephesians 5:22 -33

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

MESSAGE:

The responsibilities of both the husband and wife are spelt out in the Bible, and made very simple. The responsibility of the wife is to submit, while that of the husband is to love. Many homes are in jeopardy because this order is not being followed. These two words - submit and love - are not difficult to understand. We all know what it means to submit and what it means to love. When both parties act on this order, there will be joy in the marriage. Therefore, if there is a home where joy is missing, you can be certain that obedience to this instruction from God is missing. A woman who is loved by her husband will blossom. A man whose wife submits to him will always be happy, and at the end of the day, their marriage will succeed.

If you are a child of God, this instruction to submit to your husband or to love your wife isn't a suggestion; it is a commandment from God. If you have not been experiencing joy in your marriage, you may need to check again to be sure you truly love your wife or submit to your husband.

A certain woman was always coming to ask me to pray concerning her husband's behaviour. One day I said to her, "When you get home today, serve your husband's dinner, then invite him to the table, saying, "My lord". She responded, "Whose lord?" I continued, "When he gets to the table, kneel and serve him". She said, "Over my dead body!" You see, this woman and her husband were both professors and she saw no reason to stoop that low for him. She had given her life to Christ, but her husband was yet to do the same and she really wanted him to. She was quiet for a while then agreed to do as I had instructed. When she got home and did as I asked, her husband said, "Tell the witch doctor who did this charm for you that it will not work on me". She said "It is not a witch doctor; it is Pastor Adeboye who told me to do this". He responded, "Really? Is that what they teach you in that Church? I will go there with you, then". By the time I saw her next month, her husband had given his life to Christ and joy filled their home.

Wife, it does not matter if you are older than your husband, more educated or wealthier than he. As long as he is your husband, the Bible says you must submit. Husband, you must also love your wife unconditionally as Christ loves the Church.

ACTION POINT:

Do something special today to show your wife that you love her or husband that you reverence him.
